Chats Palace is an inclusive, dynamic arts centre in the heart of Hackney. Firmly rooted in a rich artistic heritage, we play a key role in Hackney’s growing cultural quarter and our alumni include many award-winning artists and musicians, from Plan B/Ben Drew, Cornershop, Asian Dub Foundation, Fun-Da-Mental, Adamski to Evan Parker, Ken Campbell, Gina Yashire, Mark Thomas, Spare Tyre and Graeae Theatre companies.
A music venue since 1976, Chats Palace has hosted punk, ‘new wave’ and jazz gigs – establishing a cult reputation with the likes of The Mekons, The Au Pairs, & The Leyton Buzzards appearing on the same posters as Sunday lunchtime sessions featuring jazz artists Derek Bailey, John Stephens & Elton Dean.
With a history of breaking new talent Chats Palace champions emerging artists, showcasing new material while also providing new platforms for creation, experimentation and professional development amongst established artists and companies. We thrive on a varied and eclectic creative programme and are always looking for new names to add to our illustrious artists’ rostra.
2015/6 programme highlights include
Music: Django, Steeling Sheep, Ghost Poet, Cate le Bon, Thomas Cohen, Mothers, Lail Arad, Electric Landladies, The Coalminers
Theatre: Inconvenient Spoof, Curious Monkey, Dogstar Theatre, Star Boy Collective, Liz Carr/In Company Collective.
Our black-box Theatre space is fully equipped and offers excellent technical facilities including an integrated PA system, lighting and AV. It has a separate dressing room with toilet. Ground level dock-door access for load-ins is to the rear and via the art centre’s yard. The Theatre’s location on the ground floor of the arts centre makes it fully accessible from kerb to stage. The period oak-parquet floor may be covered by dance floor and the raised stage removed. Staging and tiered, raked seating (if required) can be arranged in a variety of set-ups to suit each event.
