Performed by Helen Chadwick Song Theatre & Chats Palace Community Choir
‘Home is not a place: it’s a feeling’
We’re all trying to figure out where we belong. For some home means a life created in a new country, escaping from a war zone, or arriving from a destroyed homeland. For others, the story is more domestic – home can be simply olive oil and bread or the thick dust in the basement.
‘It’s very simple for me, home is bread and a table.’
Dalston Songs – Homerton Sings is a powerful, uplifting performance piece about roots, displacement and what ‘home’ means. Sometimes disturbing, often funny and always poignant it draws on interviews with Helen’s Dalston neighbours and Chats Palace’s Homerton community. Their stories form the basis for lyrics in an everyday-speech song cycle that is a timely work about common-ground in east London’s diverse community.
Helen Chadwick is a Hackney-based singer, composer and performance creator with a background in theatre. Her distinctive work utilises unaccompanied songs to create solo and group performances. www.helenchadwick.com
