Hackney Pride 365: Drag up teaser workshop with Felicia Jiang

Attention: this is not a make-up tutorial session cos what if your drag character does not need any make-up?! This is not a voguing dance class cos what if your drag character does not dance?
Introduce Drag with a Chinese/east asian culture lense, and break it down into theatrical self-exploration and expression method. Sharing drama/drag games around character building and give small exercises to the participants so that they can have it a go.
Context giving and warm-up: Ice-breaking game+Slideshow of gender fluidity in traditional Chinese theatrical scene. Introducing cases that bring different narratives in drag performance. 20-30min
What is your drag persona: a creative writing exercise working on name history and character building. Encourage the participants to reflect on their own personal stories and develop them into a fictional and non character, which can be their drag persona. 35-45min

Drag-up your persona: Adding layers to the creative writing base with soundtrack, body movement, prop/costume/makeup, generate ideas and prototyping your drag act. 20-30min

Felicia Jiang (she/they) is a queer theatre maker and socially engaged art practitioner. The play they directed,TANA, was performed on Edinburgh Fringe in 2023; it tells the story of two queer Chinese students who cross the boundaries of gender, intimacy and more.
