|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 8:00pm, repeating until Fri 12 Oct 2018

Multi-award winning raconteur/performer/musician Bob Karper has made a brand new, idiosyncratic and beguiling show about life growing up in the suburban American Midwest.

‘feels like a late-night chat with a stranger in a bar’ The Guardian (That’s Me on the Left in the Parka)

‘the most simple, honest and beautiful piece of theatre in town’ Glasgow Herald (Big in Japan or Three Steves and a Bob – Herald Angel Award winner)

‘comforting and familiar, tinged with the warmth of dusty Americana’ Exeunt (Black River Falls)

What are the suburbs of our consciousness? Where are the suburbs of ourselves? Multi-award winning raconteur/performer/musician Bob Karper has made an idiosyncratically individual show about life growing up in the suburban American Midwest*.

When he was a boy, Bob’s world turned upside down. His buttoned-up anti-social plumber father – in an uncharacteristic impulse of recklessness – joined the Palos Village Players amateur dramatics company, just as they were workshopping the 1970s phenomenon Oh! Calcutta!. According to Wikipedia: ‘The 1970s phenomenon Oh! Calcutta! was an avant-garde theatrical revue written by British drama critic Kenneth Tynan, filled with sketches on sex-related topics and featuring extended scenes of total nudity, both male and female.’ Nine-year-old Bob Jr’s** sheltered suburban life was never the same again…

Oh! Suburbia! presents funny, intriguing, surprising tales of life in our residential outlying districts in the form of a one-man avant-garde theatrical revue: mixing film, experimental dance*** and live musical stories about unjust childhood punishments, playground heroism, meticulously planned escapes, tragedy and comedy, life and death and everything in between. You’ll love it. Come and see.

*In Palos Heights, a southwest suburb of Chicago. **Bob’s father is also called Bob. ***Bob is not a dancer.

Age suitability – 14+ (younger admitted with parents),` brief nudity in film clips.

Bob Karper creates smart, funny, moving solo shows that mix live original music, film and true stories. Based on real events in the lives of everyday people, they revolve around themes we all can understand: self-consciousness, love, friendship and family, life and death and the suburbs.

Bob likes to make an audience think, feel and be delighted, and try and perform as honestly and genuinely as he can – talking (sometimes singing) without artifice, directly engaging thoughts and emotions. Poking them where they laugh, then poking them where it hurts a little. Then maybe poking them where they laugh again…

Bob’s work with other theatre companies ranges from intimate theatre-in-the-round to large scale tours, both as an actor and a musician, using puppetry, devising, song and physical theatre, with directors such as Tim Webb, Sally Cookson, Andre Pink, Gregg Whelan & Gary Winters. Past collaborative productions include Beastie & Festival with Lone Twin, Ear Trumpet & Turtle Doves with Gobbledygook, Me! Me! Me! & Goodbye Gunther with Frank Wurzinger, Steampunk Bob with People United and the UK wide tour of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Bob is co-creator of the upcoming family show: Alice & Bob’s Whopping Christmas Cracker Party, on throughout this December at Pegasus Theatre in Oxford.
